New Study Links Isotretinoin (Accutane) Use to Ulcerative Colitis and Inflammatory Bowel DiseaseAn article entitled "Isotretinoin Use and the Risk of Inflammatory Bowel Disease: A Case - Control Study" recently published in The American Journal of Gastroenterology concludes that Ulcerative Colitis (UC) and Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) are associated with previous isotretinoin (Accutane, Amnesteem, Sotret, Claravis) exposure. Free Accutane Case EvaluationIsotretinoin (Accutane, Amnesteem, Sotret, Claravis) is a vitamin A derivative that was approved by the FDA for the treatment of severe acne in 1982. After several reports of patients developing IBD after treatment with isotretinoin were published, IBD was subsequently listed in the package insert for Accutane as an adverse gastrointestinal effect. However, this is the first published study to conclusively associate isotretinoin use to the risk of developing IBD and UC. In this case-control study, performed using a large insurance claims database including more than 8,000 cases of IBD, it was found that previous isotretinoin exposure was strongly associated with an increased risk of UC. Higher doses of isotretinoin, dose escalation, and longer duration of therapy were all associated with the highest risk of UC. Compared with non-users, the risk of UC was highest in those exposed to isotretinoin for more than 2 months. Thus, the risk of IBD was higher for those taking larger doses of Isotretinoin and those taking isotretinoin for longer periods of time. The article concludes that UC is strongly associated with previous isotretinoin exposure. The study finds that clinicians prescribing isotretinoin as well as prospective patients should be aware of this possible association.
